DQ – This is the era of science and discovery and the development of religions and nationalism and nations. In today’s societies it is the rules regulation and bureaucratises that control nations, companies and communities. The fourth pulse is formed out of the need to stop the tyrannical builders of the individual first CP path who had no sense of shame or guilt. This strong and often dominant pulse could only be controlled and stopped by something more powerful. This change in thinking occurred about 4,000 years ago according to Prof. Clare W Graves. These paths are built to last and, for patriotic reasons and because of their efficient use in war, bureaucracies controlled them, using the maxim ‘this is the only way to do things’. To build this path needed immediate sacrifice for later reward, including even the death of others. To use this path you need to follow the rules of the road. The values and beliefs (memes) that are attracted to this basic assumption are a passive hierarchy, a rigidly structured system and positional power. The world was a place of ordered existence with an ultimate truth. Today, these are the healthy processes and procedures that underpin modern societies. However, at its worst this is bureaucratic and restricting. Command and control management systems come out of this basic assumption system: but, more importantly, so did major scientific discoveries. This is the era of the ‘scientific method’ or traditional university research. This value system is Order Driven Leading to an ordered existence under the control of an ultimate truth. It relies on a ‘Passive Hierarchy’, a ‘Rigid Structured’ and ‘Positional Power’. If allowed to this part of the integral pulse can cause unhealthy societies and organisations, but in its healthy form allows some order to be made in a chaotic and complex world. |
